Can anyone match Grace’s Dunhill Double?

In the long and proud history of Alfred Dunhill in golf, there is one golfer who holds the most unique record of all.

Branden Grace is still the only man to have won both the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland and its sister tournament in South Africa, the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Known as the ‘Dunhill Double’, it’s a record that has now stood for 12 years since Grace won the 2014 Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek, adding to his 2012 victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews.

It’s a record Grace remains proud of as he now returns to St Andrews to compete in one of his favourite tournaments of the year.

“I’ll never forget the day I won at St Andrews. That was so special to lift the trophy there. And then coming to Leopard Creek and doing it there as well. You look at the names on both trophies and it’s amazing. Being the only golfer to have won both is pretty special,” he says.

Grace says the ‘Dunhill Double’ played an important part in his own career development.

“With the Links courses in Scotland and then unique challenge of Leopard Creek in South Africa, they are so different that when you win on both you feel you can win anywhere. It gave me incredible confidence for my career that I could carry into other victories around the world,” he says.

The way he has approached both has also been very methodical. “When it comes to the Alfred Dunhill Links, the whole tournament and environment and playing with the amateurs – many of whom have become great friends over the years – just makes you want to play well. Then at Leopard Creek, the setting alone just brings an incredible calm that I really feed off as well. They are two very unique tournaments in that sense.

“When I won the Alfred Dunhill Links in 2012, I started off with that course record 60 at Kingsbarns. It felt like I couldn’t do anything wrong on the golf course. I got out there and just made birdie after birdie. It’s always great to shoot a 60 in a first round, but what made it so special was that I still went on to finish the tournament with a win.”

When asked who he believes could possibly join him as a winner of the ‘Dunhill Double’, Grace starts with his fellow countryman Richard Sterne who has an enviable record in both championships. He won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2008 and came close to the double when he finished second in the 2016 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and third in 2025.

Young South African star Jayden Schaper has also put himself in a position to claim the double following his victory in the 2025 Alfred Dunhill Championship. Branden Stone could do the same after his win in 2016.

And Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal is equally well-placed to build on his success in the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Championship with a victory at St Andrews next month.
