WendyAPPELBAUMSAChairs the De Morgenzon Estate, a wine farm and agricultural business in Stellenbosch. She founded the Wendy Appelbaum Foundation which drives programmes addressing the health and education interests and concerns of South African women. In 2015 she was named Forbes Businesswoman of the Year and Forbes Africa Woman of the Year. Says her best moment in golf was once outdriving Ernie Els, but from the women’s tee.

Before that he was with Google for ten years where he was senior vice president and chief business officer. Born in India, he now lives in California. A member of Menlo in the US and Queenwood in the UK, this is his sixth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
CharlesAYRESUSABorn in San Francisco, he is Chairman and CEO of Trilantic Capital Partners, formed by the management spin-out in April 2009 from the former Lehman Brothers. He began playing golf at Piping Rock on Long Island and now plays mostly at Shinnecock Hills. This is his eighth Alfred Dunhill Links. Has made the cut in the Team Championship twice.

Has written three best sellers: Special Heart, about his son’s three open heart surgeries, Three Days in January, about Dwight Eisenhower's last three days as President and Three Days in Moscow, about the last summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. This is his first appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
OliverBAKERUKWorking in wealth and investment management, and a graduate of St Andrews University. He is the grandson of Sir Michael Bonallack, Britain’s greatest amateur golfer and former Secretary of the R&A. Says playing Augusta with his grandfather and holing a 20ft putt on the 18th green to halve the match is his greatest golfing memory. A member of Aldeburgh and the R&A, this is the second time he has played in the Alfred Dunhill Links.

A philanthropist, he has worked for many causes including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the National Ballet of Canada, St.Jude’s Children’s Centre in India and the Family Cancer Research Institute in Toronto. A member of Nantucket, The Floridian and Toronto. Three years ago he hit Jamie Donaldson’s ball by mistake, then watched Jamie hit his ball. ‘It was a complete train wreck’ he says. This is his fourth Alfred Dunhill Links.

A member of Kristianstad in Sweden and Loch Lomond in Scotland. This is his 13th appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. Says his best moment was making the cut ten years ago with Mattias Eliasson.
ErnestoBERTARELLISWISSWinner of 2012 Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship with Swedish golfer Alexander Noren, which he described as his “greatest and most memorable golfing moment.” Ernesto Bertarelli is the man behind the Swiss yachting team Alinghi which won the America’s Cup in 2003 and 2007. A Swiss-Italian entrepreneur, who is Chairman of Waypoint Capital, he was born in Rome before his family moved to Switzerland in 1977. Plays most of his golf at Golf Club de Geneve. This is his eighth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
RichardBEVANUKChief Executive of English football’s League Managers’ Association. Before that he was CEO of the Professional Cricketers Association. A member of Mere in Cheshire, this is the 12th time he has played in the Alfred Dunhill Links. Says making the cut in 2009 with Ross McGowan was his greatest golf moment. Sits on fundraising board for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
TonyBIRDUKNow retired, he is founder and Director of Patech Solutions, an IT support company for organisations in the public and private sector, based in Lichfield, Staffordshire, UK. His great grandfather invented the famous British dessert Birds Custard. He plays most of his golf at Sherwood Forest and Whittington Heath. In 2016 he finished in the top ten in the Team Championship with Nick Dougherty. This is his eighth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
ErweeBOTHASAJohannesburg equity trader. He is a member of Leopard Creek and Randpark. This is his fourth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. In 2017 he was leading the Team Championship with Yikeun Chang with three holes to go, but finished second behind Jamie Donaldson and Keiran McManus.

However, after one year with Hampshire, he switched to rugby union in 1997 to play for West Hartlepool. He made his debut for the England Under-21 team the same year, before successive moves to Cardiff and Newcastle Falcons. In 2003 he switched to rugby league, playing for Leeds and Wigan. A member of Archerfield, this is his 13th Alfred Dunhill Links.

Says his best golfing moment was getting birdies in the last two holes to win a Pro-Am at Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship.
EdBROWNUSAHe is president and CEO of the Patrón tequila spirit company and founder of Extreme Speed Motorsports, the race team he drives for sponsored by Patrón. Says he was only looking for ways to promote his brand when he got the offer to sponsor a NASCAR driver, but this marketing idea turned into a life’s passion. He began to drive the cars himself and in 2016 he became the overall winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring. Plays most of his golf at The Bears club in Florida. This is his first appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.

SchalkBURGERSAPlayed lock for South Africa’s Springboks from 1984-86. His son Schalk Burger Jnr has played 86 times for the Springboks and is now currently playing for Saracens. Schalk Snr is a wine farmer at Welbedacht, a family-owned property in the Groenberg Mountain north of Wellington. He is a member of Wellington, the oldest nine-hole course in South Africa. Came third in the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship with Anton Haig in 2007 with son Tiaan as caddie. This is the 15th time he has played.
EleanorCANNONUKChair of Scottish Golf, following the amalgamation of the men’s Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association. Senior partner of an executive coaching company, she worked at the Alfred Dunhill Links as a St Andrews University student in 1985. A member of Ranfurly Castle, this is the third time she has played in the Championship.
TomCHAPLINUKSinger-songwriter and lead vocalist of British alternative rock band Keane, which sold more than ten million records. For the last few years the band has been inactive, and in October 2016 he released a solo album The Wave, which he followed the next year with Twelve Tales of Christmas. Says he can perform at Wembley or Live 8 without a problem…’but I’ve never felt as frightened as when I teed up on the 1st at St Andrews in 2015.’ Says he swings like a scratch golfer, but his short game is a disaster. A member of Rye in Kent, this is his third appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.

Began to play golf in Bangalore and now plays mainly at Sebonack on Long Island. As a young player he won the Indian Schools Championship and was captain of an Indian Schools team which played at Sunningdale. Was a member of the first Indian team to play in the International Golf Foundation Championship at Lahinch.
GiuseppeCIUCCISAFrom an Italian family which moved to South Africa to work in the wine and olive oil industry. Now CEO of wealth management group Stonehage Fleming in London. Some years ago he acquired the South African ‘democracy flag’ with signatures of former presidents Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk and Thabo Mbeki, which flew over the Union Buildings at Mr Mandela's inauguration in May 1994 and returned it to South Africa. Plays most of his golf at Queenwood in the UK. This is his eighth Alfred Dunhill Links.

Born in St Louis, he was a former pitcher for Central Missouri State University team. Also Chairman and CEO of Houston-based Crane Capital Group. Plays most of his golf at The Floridian, which he bought in 2010. Also a member of Monterey Peninsula in California, Lochinvar in Houston and Queenwood in the UK. Says his greatest golf moment was playing with Barack Obama and Tiger Woods at The Floridian. This is his 14th appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.

Unusually she is right handed, but plays golf left-handed, except when she putts. ‘I have no idea how this happened’ she says. Enjoys sunshine golf in Barbados and Portugal. This is her second appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
PeterDAWSONUKPresident of the International Golf Federation, he retired in 2015 as Chief Executive of the R&A. A former county player who was captain of Cambridge University Golf Club, he began playing golf at 11 and is a member of the R&A. Says his best Alfred Dunhill Links memory was playing with Nick Dougherty when he won in 2007. This will be his 13th Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
LudovicoDEL BALZOITALYBased in London, he is Vice-Chairman of investment banker Nomura. Son of an Italian Ambassador, he has spent considerable time travelling and is fluent in Italian, English, French and Spanish. Plays most of his golf at Nantucket in the US and Beaverbrook and Sunningdale in the UK. This is his tenth Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Has made the cut once.
NorbertDENTRESSANGLEFRANCEManager of Dentressangle Initiatives which provides road transportation, logistics, real estate and industrial and business services. Previously ran giant French transport and logistics company Norbert Dentressangle which was sold in 2014 to an American company. He is a major shareholder in French football club Olympique Lyonnais. A member of Golf Club de Lyon, he also plays at Golf de Gassin, this is his tenth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. He is a keen skier and hunter.
Pierre-HenriDENTRESSANGLEFRANCEA member of the Dentressangle family, he has a passion for digital technology and was a website developer before founding Hi Inov in 2012, a company which supports other businesses with technology. He is a board member of Dentressangle. Plays most of his golf at Golf Club de Lyon and Golf de Gassin. This is his third appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. His father is Norbert Dentressangle, who is also playing.
ScottDeSANOUSAFounder of DeSano Pizza Bakery, he was formerly head of stock trading with Fidelity. Plays most of his golf at Trump National in Florida. This is his 12th appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. He says his most memorable moment in the Championship was hitting to 12 inches on the 18th in St Andrews at the final round in 2007 on live TV. He is a keen wine collector. Supports the First Tee Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
BrettDESMONDIREThe son of Dermot Desmond and brother of Ross Desmond, who are also playing. This is his fourth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. A financier, he began playing golf at The Island in Dublin, but now plays mostly at Sunningdale. Says his greatest golfing moment was winning a Father & Son golf competition on Dermot’s 60th birthday. Loves rugby and supports Celtic football club.
DermotDESMONDIRECreated Ireland's financial hub, the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin. He is a partner with J.P. McManus in the Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados and is a major shareholder in Glasgow Celtic. He is a member of the K Club. Says his greatest moment in golf was winning the World Invitational Father & Son tournament at Waterville with each of his sons. Winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship in 2010 with Robert Karlsson, he has played in all 18 Championships. Since 1997 he has been Chairman of Irish charity Respect which raises funds for people with mental and physical handicaps. His sons Brett and Ross are also playing.

This is his fifth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. Agrees with his father that winning the World Invitational Father & Son tournament in Waterville was a very special moment. A keen football fan, he supports Celtic and Manchester United. Best ever handicap was four.
WilliamDEWSALLUKHas spent over 20 years working in the London insurance market. Is now CEO of Gable Insurance, a company he set up in 2004. A member of Queenwood, he says the Championship has produced two of his greatest moments in golf - playing in the final day fourball in 2006 alongside the eventual winners Padraig Harrington & JP McManus and getting a hole-in-one at Kingsbarns in 2008. This is the 15th time he has played in the Alfred Dunhill Links.

A member of Leopard Creek, this is his second appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
RickyELLIOTTUKFrom Northern Ireland, he has been the caddie for five years for Brooks Koepka, winner of three Major Championships in the last two years. He began playing at Royal Portrush, where he was a successful amateur, winning the Ulster Boys' and Ulster Youths Championships. He also competed for Ireland in the European Youths Championship alongside Alfred Dunhill Links winner Michael Hoey. He played college golf for the University of Toledo in Ohio. Realising he didn't have the game to make it as a tour pro, he became a club pro and then a caddie, starting with Maarten Lafeber, then 2003 Open champion Ben Curtis before switching to Koepka.
NeelsELSSAThe father of Ernie Els. Lives in Germiston, South Africa, and has played several times with Ernie in the Alfred Dunhill Links, most famously in 2002 when he and Ernie had to race south from St Andrews by private plane at 6am on the Sunday to get to a Guildford hospital in time for the birth of Ernie’s son Ben Neels – named after Ernie’s father. Neels has three children, Dirk, Carina, and the youngest Ernie. His golfing highlight was a hole-in-one at Turnberry. This is the eighth time he has played.
DougENGMANNUSAChairman of Sage Brokerage Holdings. Before he moved into the securities industry in 1977, he was director of the White House Conference of Youth (1970-72). He was born in Shanghai and grew up in the Far East. A former Chairman of the Pacific Stock Exchange, he has been honorary consul for the Netherlands in Northern California. He is a member of the Olympic Club in San Francisco and Silverado in Napa Valley. This is his ninth Alfred Dunhill Links.
MohammedFAROOQUAEChairman of Farooq Investments, a financial services firm based in Dubai offering asset management, real estate and investor support. He plays golf in Dubai, in the US and in the UK, at Loch Lomond and Queenwood. He loves horse racing and falcon hunting. This is his first appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
DaveFARRELLUSABass player for top US band Linkin Park. The band rose to international fame with their debut album Hybrid Theory in 2000, which went diamond in the US and platinum in several other countries. Their second album Meteora topped the Billboard album chart in 2003. Since then they have produced four more albums and sold a total of 70 million. Linkin Park are currently rebuilding after the death of Chester Bennington last year. The band was presented with the George and Ira Gershwin Award for lifetime musical achievement in May. Farrell plays his golf at Coto de Caza in Orange County, California. This is the third time he has played in the Alfred Dunhill Links. He says his greatest golfing moment was playing Augusta the day after the 2017 Masters with all the Sunday pins in place and having three birdies.
MikeFASCITELLIUSAAmerican businessman, he is one of the co-owners of Milwaukee Bucks NBA team. Founder of property company MDF Capital, he was President and CEO of Vornado Realty Trust when the company bought the giant Merchandise Mart building in Chicago. A member of Atlantic, Deepdale and Purchase golf clubs, this is his sixth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
DanielFIREMANUSAFounded Fireman Capital Partners in 2008 and currently focuses on all aspects of its investment strategy. A trustee of golfing charity First Tee which introduces the game to young people, he is also the co-founder of Liberty National Golf Club outside New York City where he plays most of his golf. This is his first appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
CianFOLEYIRESon-in-law of Irish businessman and racehorse owner J.P.McManus, who is also playing. He married Sue Ann McManus in 2007 after they met at college. This is his seventh Alfred Dunhill Links.

The firm also owns Auberge Resorts, which has properties in Aspen and Cabo San Lucas. Congaree in Savannah, Georgia is probably the most admired of the firm’s golf course developments. The Friedkin Conservation Trust is working to preserve more than six million acres in Tanzania. He owns and flies one of the largest collections of vintage military war planes in the US. This is his first appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.

Says his greatest golfing moment was playing with his uncle, former Masters champion George Archer who had a putt for a 61. Supports golf charity First Tee and the George Archer Foundation. He is a member of San Francisco Golf Club. This is his first appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
BillyGETTYUSAThird son of Gordon Getty and grandson of oil tycoon J Paul Getty, he lives in San Francisco where he is a property and golf course developer and is involved in wealth management. When he married Vanessa Jarman in the Napa Valley in 1999 they drove to the reception in a golf cart. Now a member of California Golf Club, this is the 15th time he has played in the Alfred Dunhill Links. Says his greatest moment was shooting a team score of 57 with Joakim Lagergren in 2017. Also playing with one-legged Manuel de los Santos in 2009 in a strong gale and being amazed at his skill, determination and positive attitude.
MartinGILBERTUKBorn in Kuala Lumpur, he is CEO of Aberdeen Standard, the financial services company formed by the merger of Aberdeen Asset Management, which he founded, and Standard Life. He plays at Royal Aberdeen and is also a member of the R&A. He is a Director of Aberdeen Football Club, a passion he shares with Aberdeen Standard sponsored golfer Paul Lawrie. Says watching Lawrie win the Alfred Dunhill Links in 2001 was his most memorable golfing moment. Has played in all 18 Championships.
RurikGOBELSADirector of Johannesburg stockbroking firm Golding Torr & DeDecker. He is a member of Leopard Creek. Began playing golf on a sand golf course with oil greens in Carnarvon, Western Cape. Says his greatest golfing moment was winning the 2005 Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship with Henrik Stenson.
BeltránGÓMEZ-ACEBOSPAINNephew of Juan Carlos I of Spain, the former King of Spain. He is the son of the late Luis Gomez-Acebo y de Estrada and the Infanta Pilar of Spain. He is CEO of a real estate company. A member of Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, he is a winner of the Sugar Amateur Championship in the Dominican Republic. This is his 13th appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. Says his best golfing moment was in a practice round at Kingsbarns four years ago when, with partner Gonzalo Fernandez Castaño, he beat José Maria Olazábal and Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
MatthewGOODEUKAdmired British actor, he has a long list of successful films in which he has appeared including Match Point, Imagine Me & You, My Family and Other Animals, Copying Beethoven, The Lookout, Brideshead Revisited, Watchmen, A Single Man, Leap Year, Stoker and The Imitation Game. In 2014 he joined the cast of CBS legal drama The Good Wife. Was a member of the cast of the popular Downton Abbey series and played Anthony Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret’s husband in The Crown. Says his best golfing moment was partnering Danny Willett in the 2010 Championship and playing with Martin Kaymer, the eventual winner, in the final group. This is the sixth time he has played in the Alfred Dunhill Links.
ChrisGOODWINCANBorn in Toronto, he is a Partner in Drake Goodwin, a merchant bank with interests in corporate childcare and property. Drake Goodwin also owns Redtail Golf Club, the first North American design by Donald Steel. He also plays at Lyford Cay in the Bahamas and is a member of the R&A. His most memorable golfing experience was a round with Arnold Palmer at Latrobe Golf Club, bettering Palmer’s eagle at the 6th hole with an albatross two of his own. Has played in all 18 Alfred Dunhill Links Championships, making the cut in 2009.
HughGRANTUKHugely popular actor and film producer, he achieved international recognition after his performance in Four Weddings and a Funeral. He has since starred in hits such as Notting Hill, Bridget Jones Diary, About A Boy and Florence Foster Jenkins, with Meryl Streep. His awards include a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy and Best Actor at The Venice Film Festival. He was acclaimed for his recent portrayal of Jeremy Thorpe in the BBC drama A Very English Scandal. As amateur partner, he was delighted to bring home David Howell to victory in the pro event in 2013. Says his best personal memory in the Alfred Dunhill Links was an eagle two at the 10th hole on the Old Course in a round of three over par. Worst moment was putting into a burn from the 16th green at Kingsbarns on live TV and watching his ball being carried out to sea.

He is chairman of his family company which has interests from supermarkets to financial services. He lives in Paris and plays most of his golf at Morfontaine, and is also a member at Royal Mougins in France, the R&A and Winged Foot in New York. This is his ninth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. Says his greatest Alfred Dunhill Links moment was shooting 64 at Kingsbarns in 2013.
RuudGULLITNETHOne of the first ‘rock star’ footballers. In the late 1980s, he was one of the best players in the world, possessing pace, power and vision. He first came to prominence in 1987 with his transfer from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven to AC Milan for a record fee of £6million. Wladimir also appeared with another world heavweight champion, Lennox Lewis, in the film Ocean’s Eleven. As well as being a passionate golfer, he is a keen chess player. This is his third appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links.

The Power of Love and Hip to be Square were two of their biggest hits and the 1983 album Sports sold more than ten million copies in the US alone. The band remains in great demand for live performances. Huey is also an accomplished actor. He played Billy Flynn in the Broadway production of Chicago, and in Duets in 2000 he played Ricky Dean, the karaoke hustler father of the film’s star Gwyneth Paltrow. This is his 11th appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. He is a member of Pauma Valley and Stockfarm golf clubs. Says he once holed a ball from the Road Hole bunker – by throwing it.

Says his best golfing moment was playing with Tiger Woods at the J.P.McManus Pro-Am in 2010. Once overturned a golf buggy with fellow jockeys Mick Fitzgerald and John Francome in it.
BrianMcFADDENIREFormer lead singer for boyband Westlife until he left in 2004 to launch a solo career. As well as singing, has appeared in many TV shows in the UK and Australia. He toured with Keith Duffy, formerly of Boyzone, as a super group named Boyzlife in 2016, 2017 and this year. Plays most of his golf at The Mere in Cheshire. This is his third appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Says his greatest moment was finishing runner-up in the Team Championship with Robert Rock in 2017. Winner of the Turkish Airlines world amateur series event at the K Club last year. He is a big Manchester United fan.

Has also appeared in Oliver Stone’s film The Doors, HBO’s Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives. This is his tenth Alfred Dunhill Links. Says his greatest moment in golf was playing in the last group with Paul McGinley in 2001. Also made the cut with McGinley in 2013. He is a partner in a Washington winery which has produced its own label of cabernet called ‘Pursued By Bear’, after a stage direction in the Shakespeare play The Winter’s Tale. .
GerryMcMANUSIREBorn in Limerick, he is the brother of J.P. McManus, the Irish businessman and racehorse owner, who is also playing. A finance director, he is a member of Adare. This is his 16th appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links. An enthusiastic collector of classic cars, he owns a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta once owned by Eric Clapton.
J.P.McMANUSIREJohn Patrick McManus - known throughout the world as J.P. - started working in his family’s plant hire firm, but at 20 became a bookmaker at Limerick’s greyhound track. By the time he was 26, he had bought his first racehorse and had begun what became a successful foreign currency trading business. In 1997 McManus teamed up with Dermot Desmond to buy the Sandy Lane resort in Barbados. Two years later, his horse Istabraq won the first of three Champion Hurdles. Now he owns more than 100 horses. Launched the J.P. McManus Golf Classic in Limerick in 1990 and has played some of the world’s top golfers, even defeating Tiger Woods at Limerick. Won the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship with Padraig Harrington in 2002 and 2006.

He is particularly remembered by golf enthusiasts for his superb portrayal of a wacky greenkeeper in the film Caddyshack, one of the most popular golf films ever made. In 2012 in Hyde Park on Hudson, he gave a bravura performance as US President Franklin D Roosevelt. A member of Palma Valley in California and Sleepy Hollow in Westchester, New York, he also plays a lot of golf at Pebble Beach, where he won the AT&T Pro-Am with professional D.A.Points. This is his fifth appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He is between tours of US and Australia with his band “Bill Murray, Jan Vogler and Friends”, reading literature and singing songs from his New Worlds album with three classical musicians.

He started the cricket charity Chance to Shine which has raised more than £40 million and brought the game to 4,500 state schools that never played it before. He played 133 times for Ireland and eight times for the Lions. He is Ireland’s highest try scorer with 46 and the highest scoring centre of all time. He holds the Six Nations record for most tries scored with 26. He is now a TV and radio rugby analyst. Says his greatest golfing moment was a hole in one at Portmarnock Golf Club. Sir SteveREDGRAVEUKOne of the greatest Olympians, winning rowing gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games, beginning with the coxed fours in 1984 in Los Angeles and finishing with the coxless fours in Sydney in 2000. Sir Steve received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award in May 2001 and is now a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy. He is also a trustee of Comic Relief and supports his own Steve Redgrave Fund. Since being diagnosed with diabetes in 1997, he has become an inspiration to other sufferers and is a Vice-President of Diabetes UK. He plays most of his golf at Harleyford near Marlow. Has played in all 18 Alfred Dunhill Links. Says his most memorable moment was making the cut in 2004, playing with Peter Senior.

In the 2009 Team Championship, he finished third with Dyson, which he described as ‘the best week of golf in my life.’ Plays mostly at Turtle Bay in Hawaii.

He earned $50,000 for the charity after winning the Million Dollar Hole shootout in this year’s AT&T Pro-Am. He says ‘Golf has been a great barometer for where I am with the illness. If something is not exactly right, I can feel it in my golf swing immediately’. Started playing golf in 1995 and is a member of Champions GC in Houston and Pebble Creek Country Club in College Station, but plays most of his golf on the road when he is touring. Says his greatest golfing moment was finishing second with Steve Elkington in the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship in 2001.

He says his greatest golfing moment was playing Augusta the day after the 2017 Masters with all the Sunday pins in place and having three birdies.

Says his best golfing moment was playing with Tiger Woods at the J.P.McManus Pro-Am in 2010. Once overturned a golf buggy with fellow jockeys Mick Fitzgerald and John Francome in it.

John Patrick McManus – known throughout the world as J.P. – started working in his family’s plant hire firm, but at 20 became a bookmaker at Limerick’s greyhound track. By the time he was 26, he had bought his first racehorse and had begun what became a successful foreign currency trading business. In 1997 McManus teamed up with Dermot Desmond to buy the Sandy Lane resort in Barbados. Two years later, his horse Istabraq won the first of three Champion Hurdles. Now he owns more than 100 horses. Launched the J.P. McManus Golf Classic in Limerick in 1990 and has played some of the world’s top golfers, even defeating Tiger Woods at Limerick. Won the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship with Padraig Harrington in 2002 and 2006.

He is particularly remembered by golf enthusiasts for his superb portrayal of a wacky greenkeeper in the film Caddyshack, one of the most popular golf films ever made. In 2012 in Hyde Park on Hudson, he gave a bravura performance as US President Franklin D Roosevelt. A member of Palma Valley in California and Sleepy Hollow in Westchester, New York, he also plays a lot of golf at Pebble Beach, where he won the AT&T Pro-Am with professional D.A.Points. He is also a trustee of Comic Relief and supports his own Steve Redgrave Fund. Since being diagnosed with diabetes in 1997, he has become an inspiration to other sufferers and is a Vice-President of Diabetes UK. He plays most of his golf at Harleyford near Marlow. Has played in all 18 Alfred Dunhill Links. Says his most memorable moment was making the cut in 2004, playing with Peter Senior.

In the 2009 Team Championship, he finished third with Dyson, which he described as ‘the best week of golf in my life.’ Plays mostly at Turtle Bay in Hawaii.

Says his greatest golfing moment was making eagle on the 18th on the Old Course and making the cut in 2017.

In total he captained England in 51 Test matches, winning 26, the most by any England captain. Now a cricket writer and an ambassador for the charitable Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. He earned $50,000 for the charity after winning the Million Dollar Hole shootout in this year’s AT&T Pro-Am. He says ‘Golf has been a great barometer for where I am with the illness. If something is not exactly right, I can feel it in my golf swing immediately’. Started playing golf in 1995 and is a member of Champions GC in Houston and Pebble Creek Country Club in College Station, but plays most of his golf on the road when he is touring. Says his greatest golfing moment was finishing second with Steve Elkington in the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship in 2001.
