He was highly popular for his ferocious hitting and he became the fastest batsman to reach both 1,000 and 2,000 runs in One Day Internationals and the fastest to reach 4,000, 5,000 and 7,000 Test runs.
He is a member of Wentworth in the UK and Leopard Creek in South Africa.
