A five-a-side team to dream about - getting ready for the big kick off at St Andrews

ST ANDREWS, August 24, 2019 - There’s an obvious gap. There isn’t a goalkeeper. But apart from that, this must be one of the best five-a-side football teams you could ever put together. Certainly the most creative.

And they will all be playing in the Alfred Dunhill Links next month, when they each pair up with a professional to compete in the Team Championship.

There’s bound to be some good natured rivalry amongst these legendary stars about who scores best (not goals this time) and who makes the cut. The Scottish galleries will love watching this group every minute. They are:

Luis Figo: the great attacking midfield player, one of the few footballers to have played for both rival Spanish clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid. Played 127 times for Portugal.

Ruud Gullit: one of the first ‘rock star’ footballers, everyone remembers him racing down the field with his dreadlocks flying behind him. In the late 1980s, he was one of the best players in the world winning the European Cup twice with AC Milan before moving to Chelsea.

Jamie Redknapp: a strong midfield player with a powerful shot, he played 239 times for Liverpool and won 17 England caps. Son of Harry Redknapp.

Andriy Shevchenko: one of the greatest goalscorers of his generation. He scored 175 goals in 296 games for AC Milan. Also played for Chelsea and is the record goalscorer for his national team Ukraine, with 48 goals in 111 games.

And, just in case the opposition get through, at the back, terrifying the opposition, there is the mighty Vinnie Jones, the hard man defender of Wimbledon, who, after he retired, turned into a Hollywood gangster in films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

It promises to be a few days to remember. And no one will be calling for VAR!
